Let's look at what is general anxiety disorder, which is generally known as GAD.

It's normal to feel anxious from time to time, especially if your life is stressful. However, if you have ongoing anxiety that interferes with day to day activities and relationships and it is hard to enjoy life, you may have GAD.

Generalized anxiety disorder is a relatively common anxiety disorder where a person has excessive, exaggerated, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about everyday things which is disproportionate to the actual source of the worry. They can often spend a lot of time thinking and worrying about "what if". As a result a person feels there is no way out of this cycle and can get very depressed and anxious. It can effect up to 5% of the population at any one time, and affects twice as many women as men.

GAD usually doesn't involve actual panic attacks and doesn't cause people to actually avoid situations and events. It's more the thinking and dwelling on things, and not letting things go, that causes the extreme stress and anxiety.

Even if the person knows that these thoughts are irrational and unwarranted, they can not control their worry.

Things such as a loved one being late for a meeting will have a person with GAD thinking the worse and worrying if there has been an accident. If they've gone to hospital, what will happen, how will they cope, etc. The emotional fear and worry can be quite extreme.

People with GAD often can't fully relax. They can get startled very easily and they are constantly on edge

Normal life stresses aggravate this disorder. Simple daily issues can become huge hurdles to get over. A good achiever at work and someone who enjoys life, can suddenly become despondent and very down, not finding any pleasure in work and other achievements they have.

Their worries are accompanied by physical symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, difficulty swallowing, trembling, twitching, irritability, sweating, and hot flushes.

Living with someone with GAD can become very challenging and annoying and can bring people without this disorder down and unhappy themselves.

What causes GAD? Genetic vulnerability often contributes to anxiety and depression, but not solely. If a close family member suffers from anxiety it is possible one is more inclined towards this disorder. But generally it is not known what causes some people to get this disorder and others not to.

Generalized anxiety disorder has been shown to respond best to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy involves more than just talking to a therapist. In CBT, the person gradually learns to see situations and problems in a different perspective and learns the methods and techniques to use to alleviate and reduce their anxiety.

Many times medication is used as well as therapy, but for many people it is not necessary. With a course of corrective therapy GAD is fully treatable and able to be overcome.

With help most people can return to living fulfilled and happy life.
